It was the early winter months of 2009 that a few close friends and the Khan’s brothers, passing time at a local restaurant, decided to form a cricket team. A few of us were already playing for teams throughout Toronto, Canada and felt it would be a great idea to have a team of our own where a group of friends who spends the majority of their free time hanging out together play the game they love so much. Our first question was, what would be the name of the team? A few names such as GT-Boys, GT-Warriors, Walker Terrace warriors, Titans and a few other names that did not had any real symbolism. After spending a few weeks trying to come up with a name, a name that most of us from Georgetown, Guyana were familiar with was the word “Bannas”. The urban dictionary has the meaning as “close friends of yours”, and since the team were consisted of mainly friends, the name seems most appropriate to us. Soon after, we registered our team as “GT-Bannas Cricket Club” and created a club logo. The first logo was created with three letters “GTB” and was later on modified with a shield with two halves. The upper half have the symbol of cricket stumps, a bat and a ball representing the game we play and two silhouettes high-fiving on the lower half of the shield, representing friendship.
Since our humble beginning with only one team and two wins in the 2009 season, we are now a force to be reckoned with and have two competitive teams representing us in both Ontario Cricket League and the Masters Cricket League.
